| SECURITY & CRIME | Next
Crime is a social issue. Any approach must solve
the specific social problems that create vulnerable groups and leads
to the high incidence of crime.
Any
response to crime that does not seek to address these problems will
amount to nothing more than a quick fix to satisfy the voting population
in the VERY short term and not change the situation.
- Social
action. Our society produces individuals who suffer from
dysfunctional families, learning problems, family instability, abuse,
feeling excluded and hopeless. Our social policies will allow for
early detection of individuals at risk of turning to crime, We will
develop specific, trained responses through schools, and community
based organisations, Social action is a major feature of crime prevention
plans.
- Community
Defence Partnership. As an immediate response, Citizens
Alliance will facilitate a Community Defence Partnership where joint
army and police patrols will work with community members.
- Decentralisation.
A new system of decentralisation through zoning for each community
will be developed to have adequately equipped police posts in established
zones. This will place the Police in the community, where security
is most needed.
- Skilled
manpower. In addition to equipment, we need to put more
resources into training our police, fire and prison officers.
- Legislative
reform. The current legislative framework governing the
corporate and public sectors will be revisited with a view to strengthening
that framework through consultation with the police and legal professionals.
Transparency and accountability is the focus of any Citizens Alliance
strategy.
- Rehabilitation.
Citizens Alliance will put greater emphasis incarceration. This
will reduce the incidence of repeat offen involve deep consultation
, with communities and expert workable rehabilitation methods.
