Fellow citizens of Trinidad and Tobago, the time
has come to reclaim OUR country, Citizens Alliance will guide us
all through a process of rebuilding a truly democratic nation where
equity claims the same priority as economic development.
Trinidad and Tobago has entered a new era in our
development. After 40 years of independence we must each ask the
questions. Am I independent? Can I fix my own problems? Do I make
my own decisions? Can I influence the development of my own community?
Of my Country? Clearly the answer is no. This is where Citizens
Alliance recognises that we need New Politics.
Our New Politics embrace diversity. Our New Politics
allow us to get involved through a system of governance anchored
in the community. Our New Politics will provide opportunities to
give us authority over our own lives. Our New Politics will create
new industries, real employment opportunities and better lives especially
for young people.
The Citizens Alliance will oversee returning political
power to you. "Base up" politics turns the power structure
around so that Citizens tell the government how to run their country.
The constitution of our country says:
'…respect the principles of social justice,
equity and therefore believe that the operation of economic systems
should result in the material resources of the community being so
distributed as to sub-serve the common good, that there should be
adequate means of livelihood for all, that labour should not be
exploited or forced by economic necessity to operate in inhumane
conditions but that there should be opportunity for advancement
on the basis of recognition of merit, ability and integrity".
We simply cannot survive under the burden of old
politics. In this manifesto, Citizens Alliance identifies key concerns
for us all. We arrived at these concerns through consultations with
you. The focus now is to ensure that consultation remains the basis
by which we govern our country.
